Seems $300 – 400k to expensive for a non original Duesy. Little collector value but a beautiful example. Looks gorgeous, non original coachwork built by Fran Roxas when restored in ’00s, used in many movies over five decades. 1930 Duesenberg Model J Torpedo Phaeton Rep.A rather sedate Duesy, restored 30 years ago, now lovely patina. 1929 Duesenberg Model J Murphy Convertible Berline – Est.Looks magnificent and well worth the estimate. A truly grand Edwardian car, fitted with the top of the line 40HP engine on a 123 inch wheelbase, later discovered by Walter McCarthy, restored in ’04 and shown at Pebble. 1910 Locomobile Model 40 Type I Demi-Tonneau – Est.Pre war cars are a bit of a backwater in this sale but there are some that would be highlights anywhere: The biggest change has been the increase to 500+ lots over 3 days and the increases in revenue accordingly which means that while the total gross looks similar to Bonhams, it takes 250 – 300% more cars to equal their Quail Lodge competitors. More recently these cars have been replaced with a seemingly inexhaustible selection of limited edition hyper cars although there selling prices make the change negligent. The early years saw the finest examples of Ferrari 250GT Tour de France (the highest placed Ferrari at Le Mans ’59), Porsche 917/10 (the 1972 CanAm winner), Shelby Cobra Daytona (the Championship winning car) and the Miller Special that won Indy in the 1930s. They return to Monterey for the tenth time and as with the last few years offer 500+ American collector cars, a few proper classics and large numbers of every super and hyper car on the market. Mecum have proven to be very consistent with their Monterey sale despite moving from offering classics to being focused on modern collectibles.
